I've got a friend who would like to learn how to embroider. Specifically she would like to make something for a new nephew who will be arriving early next year. Unfortunately I am not well versed in embroidery and am not sure in which direction to point her. She's looking for a place to buy supplies and general information on how to get started. I know a number of you do embroider and it's lovely. I am hoping you might have a few suggestions for her. Stores, books, maybe even an online class or two that will help her get started. I think my favorite needlework stores only specialize in cross stitch, so I'm not sure how helpful it would be to give her those links.
Any help is most appreciated! Thanks, everyone!
Sorry that I can't help; I know so little about these things that I even thought Cross stitch counted as a type of embroidery! lol!
If needlepoint is what she's thinking of there is an amazing shop local to me called The Edwardian Needle; I can tell you contact stuff if you think that might suit.

There are 2 embroidery guides you can download for free on this page if you scroll down a bit: http://www.crabapplehillstudio.com/page/goodies_to_download.aspx . This website also has a lot of cute designs. Another good site which I have ordered from is www.colonialcrafts.com. They have a "Stitchery" section with lots of patterns from different designers. Check out the patterns by Barri Sue Gaudet - there are 2 different embroidered birth samplers on this site which look pretty easy. Good luck to your friend!

Another good place to find embroidery supplies is Nordic Needle I think. Or even Joanne's. And besides Crab Apple Hill Studio, you can check You Tube for instructions. i can't tell you how many times I've learned something off YouTube.

Many thanks for the suggestions--they were all very helpful! I have passed them on to my friend and hopefully she will be able to get a start on learning embroidery!
