mainely stitching

The couple of mattress-style pincushions I've done, I've used a very lightweight interfacing to prevent the linen from fraying as I stitch the mattress closed, and I've filled them with polyfill to prevent clumping or unstuffed areas. It's a finish that I love seeing, but I didn't really enjoying doing. My fingers seemed much too large, LOL!

tammy

Wow! It's looking great. I've never done this kind of finish and I'm impressed!

Lois

It's looking great! As I haven't made one yet I'm afraid I'm no help about what to fill it with. I think you can do either quilt batting or polyfill.

Tessa

No & boo to polyfill, it is too lumpy. (toy fill)
Measure how big your mattress is and cut squares/rectangles the same size. Pile 'em up until you have the right height or thickness, then insert into mattress before closing. Try to leave a long side till last and this will make life easier.
For more lump free finishing, see my needleroll tutorial!!!

Tessa

BTW, I really love how you are finishing this design & look forward to seeing the finish finish:)

Mainely Stitching--The worst part seemed to be the corners but I was amazed to see that everything else lined up well. I also feel like my fingers are too clumsy when finishing sometimes!
Tammy--This was my first attempt and it didn't go too badly actually. :)
Lois--I think either will work. The polyfill was fine, but it does look a little lumpy now. Next I will try the quilt batting--trial and error!
Tessa--Thanks for the input--I like polyfill for the ease, but you're right that is does look a little lumpy. I am going to try and use the interfacing more often now. Thanks for the help and I will check out your tutorial! I really enjoyed making this one ane I expect I'll be doing it a bit more often now.
