Wow. This is one of the best books I have read in a while! I just finished reading The Highest Tide, and it was really excellent--especially as this is by a first time novelist. Although I had read a blurb about this and had planned to look for it in my library, it still seemed a bit out of my comfort zone in terms of what I like to read. I admit, I tend to read women authors with female protagonists. Thirteen year old Miles O'Malley narrates this coming of age story--not really my typical read. And while there are many things in this book I would expect from a thirteen year old boy, it was very well done. I think some experiences are universal, certainly I think we all have similar responses to many situations. I really enjoyed this novel. Miles is a very precocious boy--small for his age, super-smart, he can quote from memory Rachel Carson and he counts as one of his friends an elderly neighbor. The summer before he turns 14, as he spends time out in the tidal flats of the Puget Sound, he discovers unusual sea life. This causes a great deal of notoriety, and eventually people come to believe he is even a sort of prophet. Per the back cover, "In this mesmerizing, beautifully written first novel, we witness one boy's wonder with the sea during the summer that will change his life forever." I definitely recommend this one!
Glad to hear it is good. This is on order at the public library & I am the first request. Lucky Me. thanks for the heads up on this title.

Sounds like a good one. I love the front cover image, too. (Not that I should judge a book by its cover.)

Sometimes it is the cover that first draws me to a book! I'm a sucker for a really good cover!
Cari--I really liked the Historian! I wonder if they are making this into a movie?? It only was a tad bit long betwen Romania and Bulgaria--but I still enjoyed it immensely!
