I saw this book on Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater at the bookstore last weekend. It is a bit pricey for a paperback, so I had to leave it behind. But as I was checking out the receipt included a 30% off coupon for the following weekend. So last night after work, coupon in hand I headed for the bookstore. There are actually two bookstores within walking distance from my work, so I was very bad and went to both of them. "Fallingwater Rising" by Franklin Toker looked really intriguing--a biography about a famous house. I have never been to Fallingwater, and I am not even sure if they allow visitors anymore. I have seen books about it before, however. Wow--to live there!! I am still supposed to be working on the book "The Red House", and I need to pull it out and just work on that for a while I think, as it has been sitting far too long on my bedside table!
"Don Quixote" by Cervantes was another purchase. The new translation that I have been reading about must just have been released in paperback. I didn't realize that this was the 400 year anniversary of its publication until I was reading another blog. This has never really been high on my list of classics to read (though I have seen on some lists this is considered the most important classical novel). I guess if I can make it though the unabridged version of "The Count of Monte Cristo", I can take on Don Quixote's adventures as well. I am not sure when I will read this one, but I plan to try and tackle it this year some time.
I did find a dew other interesting books: "So Many Books, So Little Time" (the author tackles 52 books in 52 weeks--sounds like fun), "Housekeeping" (this is a book I have looked at countless times, but I keep seeing it on other people's blogs as a really good book, so I thought I would check it out), "Holy Fools" (I loved "Chocolat", so I think I need to read some of Joanne Harris' other books), and finally "Ice Road" (I read a good review about this one--I hadn't gone looking for it but discovered it on the shelf and in paperback). So I managed to burn up another gift certificate. I had planned on just buying a couple books and dragging out the gift certificates for as long as I could. I can see I won't make it to June at this rate!!
I was reading on some other blogs how some readers tend towards male writers or just fiction, so I was wondering how my reading patterns fell. If I am lucky I can get through about four books a month. Incredibly there are people who can read as many as 15! I wish! Of the books I have read this year 8 have been by women, 6 have been by men, 4 have been classics, and I guess I better get reading as I have yet to finish even one nonfiction title! Reading "The Count of Monte Cristo" slowed be down quite a bit as I started it over Christmas break and spent most of January reading it, so I didn't get but one other book read in that month. Too bad my reading abilities can't keep up with my shopping skills!
