What better way to start the weekend than hit the bookstores after work! I know I should work on reading the books I have rather than accumulating new ones, but I simply can't help myself. And really, there are much worse addictions to have!
Lately I have been reading all the posts over at the litblog co-op and one of the participating bloggers mentioned this title, Breath and Bones by Susann Cokal. She called it "utterly delicious", which sounded like a pretty good recommendation to me. I actually tried to find it at the library first, but my public library doesn't carry her books. So, as I had a coupon (love those coupons!), I splurged and bought a hardcover book! I don't think I would have picked this one up on my own, but I am trying to broaden my literary horizons and try out new authors, so I will start here! According to the inside book flap "Framke Summerfugl (the main character) is like no literary heroine since Fanny Hill." I also picked up a copy of The Confessions of Max Tivoli by Andrew Sean Greer. It was also mentioned on the blog. This is another unusual book--about a man who ages backwards. He is born looking like an elderly man, but as he gets older he looks younger! It was a "Today Show Pick" (which really doesn't mean much to me honestly), and it also has good reviews all over the back cover. These both look like great reads.
Of course I managed to pick out a few other things--a couple of other novels and two nonfiction titles, as well as Pages, and Bookmarks magazines, which I won't get to look at until tomorrow now that the evening has flown by. Is it actually possible to go into a bookstore and leave without at least one book?
And one more thing...I stopped by Pages Turned a while ago and she linked to the Book Sense Summer Picks list. I started to print it out, but my black ink cartride seems to have run dry, so I will give it another go...I am reading at least one of the titles listed right now. They also choose some great off the beaten track titles as well. You can check the Book Sense site to see their other book lists. I have gotten some very good suggestions there!
