I am working on another chunky book page. Actually I should be finished with it, but I am very behind at the moment. I have had a hard time getting going on this one for some reason. Usually chunky books are 4" x 4", but this one has slightly different dimensions--8" wide and 6" long. The book is called "I Take Pen in Hand", and it is meant to be in the vein of the Griffin & Sabine books by Nick Bantock. We need to have the front of the page collaged in some way, and on the back will be an envelope of some sort with a letter which tells the story on the front of the page. I have had a variety of ideas, but nothing has really inspired me enough to get me working on it. Whenever I need inspiration, of course I always turn to a book (that is where I can always find some sort of an answer or inspiration). This book, Altered Art by Terry Taylor has some really great examples in it. I have also pulled out a book of women's letters, 800 Years of Women's Letters by Olga Kenyon to browse through and see if reading real corresondence sparks some ideas. I had thought of taking some of Josephine's actual letters to Napoleon and creating my art around that idea. I have a book of clip art, which has some color drawings of the two, but I am not sure...I had also thought of doing a sort of travel letter, which would be fun to illustrate. I could put Airmail envelopes on the back, but incredibly I have not been able to find normal size Airmail envelopes. I guess actual written correspondence is dead, eh?! Anyway, I had hoped to at least get out my box of images and start there and see what pops out at me!
