I loved the book, A Very Long Engagement, by Sebastien Japrisot. As a matter of fact I think I have read all of Japrisot's books that are available here. He has written several mysteries, which I thought were great. This one is a bit like a mystery, but I wouldn't categorize it soley as a mystery. I read the book when it originally came out about ten years or so ago. It is set during WWI, and Mathilde has been told that her fiance has died. He and several other soldiers were taken to a 'no man's land' between front lines and left to die, as they had tried to injure themselves to get out of fighting. But Mathilde doesn't accept that he is dead, and we follow her search for him. I am not sure how this will be treated in the movie, but in the book Mathilde is in a wheelchair, which made this all the more unusual.
You can check out the movie's website here. The Wall Street Journal's reviewer said it is "rapturously beautiful, startingly audacious and often very funny...it will make you feel deeply about love and war." I am a bit surprised by the "funny" comment, but then it has been some time since I read the book. I can't wait to watch this, but it will have to wait until the weekend as I want to enjoy it. It appears to be over 2 hours long. This DVD set has two discs. The second disc has a 'making of the movie', and also "Paris in the 20s Before the Explosion", which sounds interesting. Am I the only one who watches the extra goodies you get with DVDs?? Hmm...I wonder if the soundtrack will be my next purchase! I only hope the movie meets my expectations!
