How can two books (paperback by the way), and three magazines possibly end up costing more than $40? Please someone explain to me why books cost so much. Books are important, I think they should be subsidized by the government and given out to educate the populace. Okay. I am dreaming. You know, you can't even buy an old book that once may have cost 25 cents for 25 cents! It is weird buying an old used book that was published originally for $1.50 for about $4.00!! But I am digressing. I stopped by the bookstore to just pick up a magazine and left with three magazines and two books and well, it wasn't a cheap excursion! I guess it is impossible to go into a bookstore to just pick up one little thing--at least for me. However, don't get me wrong--for me books are worth every penny!
So my purchases (and there could have been more, but I restrained myself) were Vermeer in Bosnia by Lawrence Weschler, Those Who Save Us by Jenna Bloom and three magazines (and one of them is for someone else!). One of the magazines is the current Pages magazine, so I hope to find even more books to buy, because you really can never own too many books!
Both books were impulse buys. I have never heard of the Weschler book. I think it was the title that caught my interest. It has certainly gotten a lot of good reviews. The San Francisco Chronicle called it "lambent...vivd.....Filigreed and moving...a gorgeous collection." The Blum book just sounded good--a daughter's investigation into her mother's past during WWII. Now I will go look through my Pages and see what else I can put on my reading list!
