Kingston by Starlight is a swashbuckling pirate's tale. The author, Christopher John Farley, was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and spins a lively tale. The book is narrated by Anne Bonny, who takes to the sea as a privateer (dressed as a man of course) and becomes Bonn. I really enjoyed this book. There are some eybrow raising parts, but it's not at all graphic. You can feel the salty spray of the sea on your face, and feel the sweat trickle down your back, and taste the sweet fruit from the isles. As much as I love books like these, I would truly never make it in the Caribbean unless I had air conditioning!! I probably should have saved this book for the dead of winter when it is frozen and dark outside, but when I found it in the bookstore I knew I would have to start it right away. It is interesting how books can build on one another. I am nearly finished with A Perfect Red, and it also discusses this time period, and privateers, and many of the same locales. I like reading about the same subjects, but from different perpectives. By the way, three of the main characters in this book were actually real people. You can read a bit about Anne Bonny here. I may have to see what other books I can find about her now!
