Ella has kindly selected the next book that The Slaves of Golconda will be reading next--The Virginian by Owen Wister. Anyone is welcome to join in the reading fun. We will be chatting about it Sunday April 30, so there is plenty of time to find a copy. Last night I picked up mine at the bookstore (along with a few other selections...). I have to admit I do not tend to read Westerns, though Cormac McCarthy's books (I have not read all of them...but I highly recommend him as an excellent author) come the closest. The good thing about these reading groups (online or at home)--you are introduced to books you might never have chosen to even look at in a bookstore otherwise! Actually just reading the book description...how can you go wrong..."the hero-tall, taciturn, unflappable, confident in his skills, careful in his honor, mysterious in his background; the heroine-the 'schoolmarm from the east,' dedicated to civilizing the untamed town but willing to adapt to its ways--up to a point; and the villain, who is a liar, a thief, a killer, and worst of all, a coward beneath his bluster." I have a feeling that this is actually going to be really good--especially as a study of American literature.
Isabella has suggested reading Middlemarch by Geroge Eliot. This has long been on my TBR pile, but I hate to say I don't often consider it when I am choosing a new book to read. This is due to the hefty nature of the book--over 800 pages. Don't get me wrong--I don't mind long novels, but you have to be in the mood for them. This would be the perfect time to start it. This should be a slower read and Isabella has created a blog, so go check it out--Reading Middlemarch. It would be good to read this in a group, and I am looking forward to this one, too.
If you are still looking for other reading options, you can head on over to Reading Matters (where I am still working on the last reading selection, Fall on Your Knees by Ann-Marie MacDonald...and I am determined to finish it!). Next time around we have been given a choice of three books to vote on: Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, Saturday by Ian McEwan, and Snow by Orhan Pamuk. I voted for Snow. We should be finding out soon what the selection is! And there is a new online book club at, On the Page, where they are currently reading The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. So, the heck with laundry, must get reading!
