These are from my current book want list:
- The Portable Dorothy Parker (anything really by her--this looks like a nice collection)
- Beyond Black-Hilary Mantel (I just got this one through ILL, so I will be reading it soon)
- Parnassus on Wheels-Christopher Morley (this one keeps popping up on different blogs)
- Something Russian-Turgenev, Dostoevsky? Maybe Notes from Underground or War and Peace? I keep seeing Russian lit on everyone's TBR piles or recent reads...I must be missing out on something good since so many people are reading it (it being Russian lit).
- A Year in the World-Frances Mayes (the closest I will get to a vacation this year)
- Sorrows of Young Werther-Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (a recommendation from an author)
- Woman in Berlin-Anonymous (waiting for the paperback for this one)
- The Emigrants-W.G. Sebald
- Proust (uh huh, sure, but it sounds good)
- Johnny Got His Gun-Dalton Trumbo
- Philip Roth-something, not sure what, but one of his earlier books.
I keep adding titles to my lists (there is more than one floating around out there) from recommendations from other bloggers, and then I found this link thanks to Diana and added more titles. Don't scoff as it is Oprah related. I really loved going though the "browse x's bookshelf" links. I am particularly interested in which books authors list (I haven't gone through all the links). I like reading the blurbs about each title. I haven't read too many of the "what reading means to...", but I thought this was a nice quote from Sigrid Nunez (I have requested her newest book from the library):
Deep in a story, I have sometimes been lucky enough to reach that place where time vanishes and life comes to a standstill. It is partly this that keeps sending me back to the bookshelf—the hope of recapturing that blessed moment when, in the words of Nabokov, "everything is as it should be, nothing will ever change, nobody will ever die."
What other good books should I add to my list? I am planning on going to the bookstore tomorrow (list in hand as always), so good reading suggestions are always most welcome.
One more note-check out this wonderful REALLY Dead Women Writers Meme, which I found via Dorothy W. I don't dare list the books here as I don't think I would be able to cross a single one off the list. I felt pretty good just seeing how many I had heard of! And I even had a very few of the books! Perhaps I should take this list to the bookstore tomorrow!
