Miss Brodie is a little dictator isn't she? She gave me the creeps. I agree with you that Spark is worth more study. I really enjoyed both of her books I read.

Well, crap. Now I have to read the Brodie book, too!

Dorothy W.

I like your point that Spark says more in fewer words than just about anyone else -- it's so true!

Wow - now I want to run out & get this one, too!!!

If you get the chance, Water for Elephants is a must for your SUMMER reading list.

I have three Muriel Sparks - A Far Cry from Kensington, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, and The Finishing School. Looks like it is time for me to bring them out and read them! Sharon (from Ex Libris)

What a wonderful post, Danielle! You have made me want to go out and read something by Muriel Sparks now! I actually love the sound of The Driver's Seat - I quite like dark, interesting books and this seems to fit the bill.

If you're interested in studying Spark further, the next issue of the journal Modern Fiction Studies is devoted to Spark's work, with an essay by yours truly

Jonathan--Thanks so much for the heads up. I work in an academic library so I will nab the journal when it comes in and read it! I've not read anything by her in a while, perhaps it's time for another of her novels.
