Because you can never have enough excuses to read more books. I know I shouldn't even think about diving into anymore new books (must read current stack of books), but oh well. Since today is officially the last day of the Summer Reading Challenge, it is time to think ahead to lovely, cool, autumn days. I didn't get all the books from the last challenge read (am currently still reading book #5, but plan on reading the last three eventually--I always have a mystery on my pile, and I do want to read them still!). Carl V. has proposed a new challenge: "Readers Imbibing Peril (R.I.P.) Autumn Challenge". As I had in mind reading some books that fit with the season anyway, the timing is perfect. And he has made this into a bit of a contest:
"Post an entry on your blog indicating that you are taking on the Readers Imbibing Peril (R.I.P.) Autumn Challenge and pick out any 5 books that you want to read that you think meet the very open, broad criteria of being scary, eerie, moody, dripping with atmosphere, gothic, unsettling, etc. and vow to read them. You may have even read one recently and want to count it. That’s it!"
And I have already chosen my books (this part wasn't so hard as I had a few that I was planning on reading anyway):
- The Mystery of the Sea by Bram Stoker (I just started this one)
- Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
- Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
- Murders in the Rue Morgue: The Dupin Tales by Edgar Allen Poe
- The Turn of the Screw by Henry James
- The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield (as an alternate)
Carl is even providing a prize for reading along. So if you are interested in joining in, just leave a comment on his blog! Perhaps I can do better this time around--only five books before Halloween and all are less than 300 pages!
