Since it is Friday the 13th, I thought today would be the perfect day to finally do the Halloween meme that has been floating around the blogosphere (which I initially found at The Literate Kitten).
1. What is your favorite work of horror fiction? I don't really read a lot of horror fiction, but I have to say I really enjoyed The Turn of the Screw. In its own way it was a chilling story. Otherwise I will have to go with the standard Stephen King. It has been ages since I read him (and I can't even remember all the books that I read by him), but The Shining definitely stands out.
2. What is your favorite work of science fiction/fantasy? Again, I don't read much science fiction and fantasy. What am I missing out on? I know there is lots of good stuff out there. I have read a few things by H.G. Wells which I have liked--particularly The Time Machine (and I have several other novels by him on my TBR pile).
3. Who is your favorite monster? The mummy from Abbott and Costello (or any monster from any Abbott and Costello movie--not too terrifying--even sort of likeable!).
4. What horror movie gives you the most chills? Now this is more up my alley--I have watched lots of scary movies (what is it about liking scary movies?). Anything by M. Night Shyamalan is good (though once you know the twist it isn't so surprising anymore). I was sort of freaked when I first saw The Blair Witch Project (though I think it is sort of silly now). Probably the one movie I have always thought was chilling is Rosemary's Baby!
5. Freddy versus Jason? Hmm. I can't say I like either. I wouldn't want to meet either in a dark alley, but I will say Jason.
6. What is your favorite Halloween treat? Today? Those little Reese's peanut butter cups. Popcorn balls are pretty good, too. Popcorn balls seem natural on Halloween!
7. Ghosts or goblins? Goblins sound nasty. Definitely ghosts.
8. What is your scariest encounter with the paranormal? I don't think I have one as I don't really believe in ghosts. However if I am home alone and I need to do laundry and it is nighttime, and I have been watching something scary on TV, I can usually freak myself out in my creepy basement. I live in an old house and the basement is not finished and has three rooms (two closed off by old, rickety doors), and if I let my mind wander...well, I can race up those stairs pretty quickly. Okay, I know, silly, but I can't help myself!
9. Do you believe in ghosts? No. If they are out there they haven't taken any notice of me. But I still don't mind them in books and movies!
10. Favorite Halloween costume? I'm a bore. I haven't worn a Halloween costume since I was really little, and then it was probably only those little plastic masks that kids used to wear! If I was going to dress up now I think it would be fun to dress up as Marie Antoinette and have big hair, powdered white!
