I always have a bit of a mental queue going in my head of what I want to read in the near future. Although many people are looking back over 2006 (and I still plan on doing that as well), I am already looking forward to 2007. In that spirit (and because I so thoroughly enjoy book lists) here are fourteen books that I really want to read next year. Since I am going to try and read more nonfiction I'm going to split my list in half. Fiction reads (in no particular order):
- His Dark Materials Trilogy by Philip Pullman - I have heard good things about this set from readers I trust, so I have already mooched the first book and it is waiting here for me to read.
- Fingersmith by Sarah Waters - I have yet to read anything by Waters and this one sounds excellent--a Victorian pastiche. As a matter of fact I want to read all of her books.
- Jar City: A Reykjavik Thriller by Arnaldur Indridason - I love mysteries and this is another one that several bloggers have recommended.
- 13 Steps Down by Ruth Rendell - Actually anything at all by Ruth Rendell/Barbara Vine because she is so good at what she does...I think I have liked just about everything I have read by her (and that's quite a lot really).
- Pinkerton's Sister by Peter Rushforth - It appears that Amazon reviewers have not been overly kind to this book, but at least two book bloggers I trust read it and liked it, so that is enough for me. I think this is written in the style of stream of conscious, so maybe it would not appeal to all (hance the less than glowing reviews)?
- The Game of Kings by Dorothy Dunnett - I have all of her Lymond and Niccolo books, and it is high time to get started on reading them!
- Secret River by Kate Grenville (another book that I have read good things about from other bloggers).
Nonfiction Reads:
- Ex Libris: Confessions of a Common Reader by Anne Fadiman - I love reading about reading.
- America's Women: 400 Years of Dolls, Drudges, Helpmates, and Heroines by Gail Collins - I really want to read more women's history books.
- Wanderlust: A History of Walking by Rebecca Solnit - Another book that I have read good things about, and as I love to walk this seems particularly fitting!
- Women Romantics 1785-1832: Writing in Prose by Jennifer Breen - I am still interested in the Romantics.
- Marie Antoinette by Antonia Fraser - I haven't seen the movie (at this point I guess I will be renting it), but I do want to read her biography.
- Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time by Dava Sobel - I have already watched the first half of the movie and I really want to read the book.
- Color: A Natural History of the Palette by Victoria Finlay - I love this sort of book...part history, part travelogue, part social science, she traveled to various countries to find the ancient sources for natural colors.
Of course this is today's list (though there are more than a few titles that keep popping up lately...), but who knows what the list will be next week or next month!
