Last night I was reading along, nearing the end of part one of Fingersmith...reading those last couple of pages, when it hit me. And I thought omigod... How could I not see what was coming? Waters is brilliant. I actually laughed out loud in appreciation of the twist. She just about out-does Wilkie Collins (and that is telling you something since Wilkie Collins is one of my very favorite authors). I'm still stunned. No doubt as I was reading, Sarah Waters heard a little bell ring, and she thought, 'ah, yes, another reader duped' and smiled to herself at her success. I'm only a third of the way into the story. Can she pull off the rest? How do you possibly top what she has just done? Now if you have read this already (don't tell me!), but you will know exactly what I am talking about. If you haven't...go out right now...this very minute...and grab a copy of Fingersmith from your library or the bookstore and read it! Why on earth did I wait so long? Go on. Honestly you won't regret it.
