I have not stepped inside a bookstore (new or used) for weeks now. My feeling of complete book saturation has not stopped me from Bookmooching or ordering a few new titles, however. I think all in all I have been showing reasonably good restraint (for me anyway). I've been feeling a little claustrophobic by having so much stuff lately (and wanting to pare things down at home), but I am not sure how long it will last. That buying brand new books feeling is always so nice...So to tide me over here are a few new ones--from the bottom up (four of them were free bookmooches by the way):
- Made in Heaven by Adele Geras. She writes children's books from what I have read on other blogs but has some adult novels as well. I am looking forward to reading her work.
- Foreign Affairs by Alison Lurie. She won the Pulitzer for this novel about two academics in London.
- Wanderlust by Rebecca Solnit. A history of walking, this and the Lurie are Dorothy W. suggestions.
- The Golden Child by Penelope Fitzgerald. I seem to be collecting her books, now I need to sit down and read one. This sounds sort of mystery-ish.
- The Savage Garden by Mark Mills. This was a total impulse buy. It is a bit of a mystery set in Italy after WWII and sounds really good. Murder, summertime in Italy and a Renaissance garden--yummy.
- The House at Riverton by Kate Morton. I saw this one mentioned on a blog. Another fictional book about Edwardian England! I can't wait to start it.
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows by J.K. Rowling. Yes, another HP--you've likely been seeing him pop up on blogs all over the place. I am about a third of the way through book 6. At first I felt like I was dragging my feet with it (I have too many other really good books started so it is hard deciding which to read), but I have finally gotten into the spirit of it. It would be nice to finish it this weekend and get sstarted on the last one this week, but we'll see. As for the new one--It is sitting in a pile by my computer...I'm starting to think there is more of a temptation to turn to the last chapter and peek than read any spoilers on the internet. I am trying hard to not give in to the temptation, so I will be avoiding anything about HP that I can read it (so far I have "seen" or heard about a NYT book review that came out before the book (!), two stories on CNN, lots of blog mentions and I scrolled quickly by the Amazon reviews when I got the link. I'll sort of be glad when all this craziness is over and I can get back to my regularly scheduled books!
