Have you seen this? Amazon is now offering Kindle -- a wireless reading device. I just noticed it today when I was searching for books (it's hard to miss actually). While I am sure there are some advantages to these little devices, I have to say I am not much of a techie (I don't own or want a cell phone, but wouldn't mind having an iPod--welcome to the 21st century--hah). It looks like you can download lots of books and newspapers, keep notations and such. But if I understand correctly you can only import books you purchase from Amazon onto the reader (not free books from the library, or Project Gutenberg?), which (conveniently) you can search for and buy on your Kindle. The product itself is a steep $400, and the books an additional $10 a pop. I know some people love this sort of technology and will likely snap these up, but I think I will have to stick with my old, dependable books. Part of their attraction for me is the design (I mean think of those lovely Persephones--on a Kindle?--not the same effect, thanks). I like the feel of a book in my hand and turning those pages. And I love my old, tattered books. Some are very old and were read and loved by other readers before me. It will be interesting to see how these sell. Will I be seeing students using them to read books on in my library (they certainly love their cell phones!)?
So, will you be adding a Kindle to your Christmas wish list?
