Ever since my recent post on dystopian books, I've wanted to list all the great suggestions I received as a result. I actually thought I had done a good job getting all the famous dystopian novels on my list, but really I barely skimmed the surface I soon found out. It's nice having a handy list (complete with links, so you can read the book descriptions), so without further ado...in case you have an inkling to read a little dystopian literature, you can start with these:
- Gift Upon the Shore, M.K. Wren
The Stand, Stephen King
- Lucifer's Hammer, Larry Niven and Jack Pournelle
- The Tripods Trilogy and No Blade of Grass, John Christopher
- News from Nowhere, William Morris
- After London, or Wild England, Richard Jefferies
- Ectopia, Ernest Callenbach
- Toward the End of Time, John Updike
- Cat's Cradle and Player Piano, Kurt Vonnegut
- Divided Kingdom, Rupert Thomson
- The Lathe of Heaven, Ursula K. Le Guin
- The Pesthouse, Jim Crace
- World Made by Hand, James Howard Kunstler
- The Children's Hospital, Chris Adrian
- The Stone Gods, Jeannette Winterson
Love in the Ruins,Walker Percy
- Ariel, Steven R. Boyett
- Parable of the Sower, Octavia Butler
- We, Yevgeny Zamyatin
- Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Philip K. Dick
- A Scientific Romance, Ronald Wright
- I am Legend, Richard Matheson
- The City of Ember, Jeanne DuPrau
- Gatherine Blue, Lois Lowry
- Country of Last Things, Paul Auster
- The Marriages Between Zones Three, Four and Five , Doris Lessing
- Stand on Zanzibar , John Brunner
- The Elementary Particles , Michel Houellebecq
- Perdido Street Station, China Miéville
Okay, so that's quite a list! I hope I didn't miss any of the suggestions. I'm not surprised really that it's so long--get a few readers together and ask for suggestions and this happens very easily I've found! It makes me want to print it out and go shopping, but I will work on the unread books on my original list first. I have looked many of these up in hopes of mooching some titles, but I've only found The Stand, which I am watching the mail for. As always, thanks everyone for sharing your recommendations!
