I've started reading A Fortnight in September by R.C. Sherriff. It begins with a family preparing for a holiday by the seaside. I wish I could join them, and by reading the book, in a sense I will be. I'll let you know how it goes.
Reading about other people's bookstore visits makes me want to go shopping as well. I've not stepped foot in a bookstore since last May at least! I wish I could say I haven't bought any books since then, but online shopping just isn't the same. I have a hard time browsing online, so I feel like I am missing out on all the new fall books. I'll have to remedy that soon.
More than one person I know has hit local library sales. It's already that time of year? I have my own public library sale to look forward to this coming Thursday. I plan on looking specifically for Viragos, anything by Angela Thirkell, and I'll have to make a list of books that I am missing in some of my favorite mystery series. There are always loads of mysteries on offer, but I never make a list of specific titles and then when faced with row upon row of books I can never seem to remember what I don't have already.
I've been reading and talking a bit lately about Ruth Rendell/Barbara Vine and am happy to see not one but two new books out this fall. The Birthday Present (under the Vine name) is already out in the UK (not sure when it or the other new book will be released in the US), so I may have to break down and order a copy online. There was an interesting article on Rendell and this book in the Telegraph. The subject matter is somewhat unusual, but perhaps not considering the author. Not much shocks me anymore when I read her books. She's such an unusual and interesting woman.
Did you know that Jar City has been made into a movie? Apparently it has even been aired on the Sundance Channel, but as I have very few cable channels I, of course, missed it. I've not yet read the book, but it's high up on my stack (aren't they all?). Perhaps the desire to see the movie will urge me on to read the book sooner than later.
I will be reading some ghost stories this weekend. I've pulled out a few anthologies and have been flipping around and looking for something good. The weather may even cooperate--it's been crisp and cool out and it's even supposed to rain later. Somehow the right atmosphere always makes reading ghost stories more enjoyable.
