It's not as though there has been a dearth of new reading material to choose from so far this year, but all of a sudden there seems to be stacks of new books out (along with books that have been in my piles for a long while) that I want to read. Two visits in the last week has netted me these new books from the library. Here's my third post in as many days about new books I want to read...I'm not sure which ones I will actually get to, but as always I want to read all of them!
Death with Interruptions, José Saramago. This is an author I keep meaning to read. Am I the last person to read something by him? His latest features death, who decides to take a holiday, and the repercussions.
Marrying Anita: A Quest for Love in the New India, Anita Jain. Normally I'm not sure I would pick up a book like this, but it sounded sort of interesting. Jain, an American daughter of Indian immigrants, decided to move back to India after becoming fed up with the New York singles scene and give an arranged marriage a try.
Résistance: A Woman's Journal of Struggle and Defiance in Occupied France, Agnes Humbert. This is a book I've been wanting to get my hands on after reading several very good reviews of it. Humbert was an art historian when she started a newsletter called Résistance (giving the French Resistance its name). She became part of the Resistance and was betrayed to the Gestapo. This book is a translation of her journal, and I can't wait to start it.
Company of Liars, Karen Maitland. I was really excited about this one, but now that I finally have it, I'm not sure I'm in the right mood to read it. It pays homage to The Canterbury Tales and The Decameron.
Lulu in Marrakech, Diane Johnson. This one does appeal to me, but I am disappointed to see less than glowing reviews of it (not that that ever stopped me from reading a book that appeals). I like Diane Johnson's style, but I wonder if I shouldn't just go back and read some of her older work that I've not yet gotten to/
Library books always get me into trouble with my current reads (I'm easily distracted sometimes). If only the library allowed for a longer check out time than three weeks! Maybe I'll get to renew a few of these, though. Waiting lists always put a damper on things.
