You may have already heard of The Golden Notebook Project, but I thought I would mention it anyway. I love this idea and the fact that it is possible thanks to the web. I have never read Doris Lessing's The Golden Notebook (regrettably I've not read any of her work yet), though she's obviously an important and influential author.
"On November 10th, The Institute for the Future of the Book kicks off an experiment in close reading. Seven women will read Doris Lessing's The Golden Notebook and carry on a conversation in the margins."
I would love to read along and am very tempted to order a copy of the book, though I'm not sure I can manage it with my other reading plans at the moment. I'll be curious to at least see how the Project progresses and watch from the sidelines.
I'm waiting to see what book arrives in the mail from my postal reading group, as we've just mailed off our books on to the next person in line. I loved the first book that I read, and I suspect I would have enjoyed the next book had I started it sooner than I did. Ever the procrastinator I waited until the last week and discovered it is not a fast moving book, but one that is thoughtful and requires time to read. Unfortunately I have had to send it on only partially finished so that I don't cut into reading time for the next person in line. Lesson learned--start book when I receive it rather than when I need to send it off!
I've finally given up on Bloglines. It has exasperated me one too many times this past week. I think it might be a combination of Bloglines and Internet Explorer, which has also been exasperating me. I am currently using Firefox (am hoping to get into the habit) and this morning I started adding RSS feeds to my Google Reader account. I have to say Google Reader feels very strange. I don't quite have it down how it works, but I think I just need to get used to it and mess around with it until I figure things out. For example--is the list of posts always there? And they are not alphabetical. With Bloglines they were listed alphabetically and once you viewed them they were gone from the list. How do I tag a post to read later? Mark the star? Or check it as "unread"? In any case it has to work better than Bloglines. I hope to have my blogroll added by the end of the weekend, and it would be nice to actually get caught up on reading posts, too, though I think I will never actually be caught up with those (much like my reading piles)!
