I mentioned I've been accumulating some new books. Some were found on a couple of shopping expeditions and some came in the mail but all were spread out over the past month. First the mysteries:
Have His Carcase, Dorothy Sayers - Dorothy's recent post on Gaudy Night makes me want to pick up another Dorothy Sayers novel myself. I like the character of Harriet Vane, and she happens to be featured in this novel. I'd like to start from the beginning of their relationship, but this was the only Sayers' novel they had with Harriet.
The Widow, Georges Simenon - Another of his serious novels.
The Silver Swan, Benjamin Black - I read Christine Falls and have been looking forward to Black's next novel.
Silent on the Moor, Deanna Raybourn - Not very excited about the new cover design, but the story should be a fun romp.
The Unfinished Clue, Georgette Heyer - Still need to read one of her mysteries, now I have a few to choose from.
I'm Not Scared, Niccolo Ammaniti - I'm excited about this one. Apparently Ammaniti is a young up and coming Italian crime author.
Still Life, Louise Penny - Kay has raved about this Canadian author, so I was happy to find her first mystery at the bookstore on my last visit.
Dog Day, Alicia Gimenez-Bartlett - The next Petra Delicado mystery.
And the rest:
Metamorphoses, Ovid - I've wanted to read this since last year when I read a novel that talked about it in great detail. Also I think references to these mythological tales pop up all over in literature, especially in Shakespeare.
Manhattan Transfer, John Dos Passos - I've always been curious about this author.
Marry Me: A Romance, John Updike - I should really read and own something by Updike. I read one novel years ago, but it's faded from my mind.
Collected Short Stories: Volume 1, W. Somerset Maugham - I want to get all four volumes eventually. Thic collection contains 30 stories set in the islands of the Pacific Ocean, England, France and Spain.
Don't Look Now, Daphne du maurier - More short stories.
Bitter Sweets, Roopa Farooki - This was nominated for the Orange Prize.
Berlin, Pierre Frei - This is a thriller set in post-WWII Berlin.
