Last weekend I had too many errands to take care of to spend any real time reading, but this weekend I hope to make up for it. During the work week I read in whatever bits and pieces of time I can snag. Unfortunately it's not always really quality reading time, which for me means quiet time and a nice big chunk of it. You would think a library would be a good place to read, but with all the construction that we've had at my library, not to mention two floors with half the library closed off, it's not been terribly conducive to quiet reading. The construction walls have finally come down, however. Although the areas are not yet open to the public, soon they will be. That means there will be lots more seating and everyone won't be all squashed together. I might finally be able to find a nice corner somewhere away from someone talking on their cell phone! In any case, these are the books I'm hoping to make some progress on with special attention spent on the top book. I'm not sure I'll finish it by Tuesday, but I should come close.
I also hope to catch up on some magazine reading. For Christmas I received a subscription to the Smithsonian magazine, which I've always enjoyed reading. I'm a terrible magazine reader, though. I tend to pick up a book instead of a magazine, but I have a small stack of them now and there are lots of articles I really do want to read. The latest issue includes a brief article on author Eudora Welty. She was born 100 years ago in April and before she published any of her short stories, she had a one-woman show of her photographs. I've never read Eudora Welty, but maybe this will inspire me to pick up one of her books.
And did you know that Sarah Waters finally has a website? I can't wait until her new book, The Little Stranger is released at the end of next month. I have her other books in paperback, but I'll be getting this one as soon as it's out in bookstores. Part of the first chapter has been posted on her website. I'm not sure whether I want to read it now, or wait until the book comes out. Do I want to be tempted when I won't actually be able to read the book for a month yet? In a way it's a little nerve wracking. The two books by her that I've read were so good (really good) how will this compare? Somehow I don't think Sarah Waters can write a bad book, though. If I didn't already have so many other books started I wouldn't hesitate to read one of the two I've not yet read while I wait for the new one. I must say, it's kind of nice to have this kind of dilemma.
