Since there was a Part 1, you were expecting a Part 2, right? In the week since I posted my list of new and forthcoming books I think I've added six or seven more titles, so I will have to pick and choose the most appealing books to share rather than bombard you. These are the sorts of books I would go directly to the library to request, but I am taking a temporary break from library books to work on my own piles. Now I just need to not lose the paper these are all written on. So, more new books that have piqued my curiosity:
Grace Hammer: A Novel of the Victorian Underworld, Sam Stockbridge - "An engrossing suspense novel set in Victorian London about stolen fortunes, romance, murder, and revenge." After reading Wilkie Collins I am in the mood for more Victorian England.
Louisa May Alcott: The Woman Behind Little Women, Harriet Reisen - This is a biography I think I will have to check out.
Sound of Wings, Mary Lovell - Another biography. Since I am going to be reading a fictional account of Amelia Earhart, maybe following it up with something factual would be good, too.
Coral Thief, Rebecca Stott - I have her first novel, Ghostwalk, to read and this one sounds equally as good to me. It is " a provocative and tantalizing mix of history, philosophy, and suspense" set in post revolutionary Paris.
Lady Mcbeth's Daughter, Lisa Klein - This is a retelling of Macbeth for a YA audience (though I think it sounds good and will likely appeal to adult audiences as well. I have her Ophelia on hand, which I've heard good things about. My plan is to read Hamlet this year and a few variations on the story as well (including Klein's Ophelia).
Day After Night, Anita Diamant - This novel is based on "the extraordinary true story of the October 1945 rescue of more than two hundred prisoners from the Atlit internment camp, a prison for 'illegal' immigrants run by the British military near the Mediterranean coast north of Haifa. The story is told through the eyes of four young women at the camp with profoundly different stories. All of them survived the Holocaust."
Ciao Bella, Gina Buonoguro - "Graziella's husband Ugo fought in the Italian resistance since before the start of the war. Yet it has been months since the Germans retreated and there has been no sign of him since. She has begun to think that she has lost Ugo forever when the arrival of a young American soldier in the village offers her a chance at escape. But now that she feels free to leave, is a life in America what she wants? Is it possible to connect with a member of a military that may have left a stamp of terror and death upon her village?"
Family Album, Penelope Lively - This seems to be a novel of families and domestic life. I suppose I really should read one of her previous novels--I have at least two on my shelves...
With fall just around the corner I expect my "looking forward to/new book" list to grow even longer. Are there any forthcoming books--first novels or new books by a favorite, old author--you can't wait to see in the store?
