Once again I took my nice, big library tote bag to the library sale and filled it with some good books. No Viragos again this time, but I still found some books that look like good reads.
Clouds of Witness, Dorothy Sayers
The Summer Before the Dark, Doris Lessing
The Sleeper, Gillian White
Barren Ground, Ellen Glasgow - This is a nice (old) cloth Modern Library edition. She's an American novelist who was writing in the 1920s and 30s and won the Pulitzer Prize. I'm looking forward to reading her.
The London Scene: Six Essays on London Life, Virginia Woolf - Another nice cloth edition though it's ex-library. It must not have been checked out much as it's in good condition despite the property stamps and labels.
Selected Cronicas, Clarice Lispector - Brazilian author who seems to be getting some press these days.
Venetian Stories, Jane Turner Rylands - These look good. I can't say how many times I've looked at this book in the bookstore.
Amongst Women, John McGahern - I dicovered this author via Reading Matters who has said some vey nice things about him.
The Magdalen, Marita Conlon-McKenna
And a few more:
Here They Come, Yannick Murphy - A coming of age story set in 1970s NYC. This one sounds interesting.
The War Against Miss Winter, Kathryn Miller-Haines - WWII mystery set in NYC. I think I first came across this author via Iliana
Enghanted Night, Steven Millhauser
The Last Town on Earth, Thomas Mullen - I wanted this one when it came out in hardcover. It's set in the Pacific Northwest during WWI.
On Beauty, Zadie Smith - I really want to read Zadie Smith, but to be honest this one never really appealed to me. However, I couldn't pass it up for $1.50! Who knows it could be a wonderful read.
The Fall, Simon Mawer - Never heard of this one or the author but it's another WWII novel that sounds interesting as well.
The Pillars of the Earth, Ken Follet - I think I'd like this but I never got around to buying it. This copy is almost brand spanking new.
Now to find homes for them on my shelves. I've had to become really creative since my shelves are beyond overflowing...
