I never realized Cliff House was a national park!

Jeane

A lovely little place to go to (but it won't feed you) is the community gardens. It's near the Fort. I don't know exact directions, having discovered it by accident once but it was so pleasant to sit there and see the flowers and birds and insects.

Danielle

It sits on national park land apparently, and those businesses, even though they are private must still close. Crazy--and annoying. But oh well, we'll have to try something new!

Danielle

I'll look in my guide book. Is the Fort on government land--it may be off limits, too. I never realized how many places there were in national park property! It sounds quite nice, though!

I thought museums were closed. i was planning to go to New York and people told me not to.
Too bad you can't postpone it. It's a huge disappointment for you, I'm so sorry on the plus side, there is still so much to see.

Is Monterey too far away? What about Sausalito?

Privately-owned or state-owned museums will be open. Do they do cruises of SF Bay? We took two boat cruises last year in VA and loved them. If they have a "Duck Tour" of the city, that's fun. Drive to Napa Valley; it should be pretty this time of year. I hate wine, but I still enjoyed the wine tours.

Um, I'm not sure. I just walked up to it one day and then kept going by regularly. It's full of community plots, I don't think it's government-run. Might not even be on the same property, just adjacent to.

I didn't realize Cliff House was going to be closed, either. I never ate at that local, but I did several times climb down the trail to walk among the ruined walls of the old pools- very cool. There's even a spot where you can walk through a low cave in the rock under the bluff and it comes out the other side ocean waves crashing in.

So disappointing about Alcatraz and now Cliff House too! There are still plenty of things to do and who knows, you might discover something really wonderful you wouldn't have otherwise.

I really can't comprehend this shut-down. I'd have thought that if a government (i.e. Barak's Democrats) had a majority in the house, that their bills would go through unless some of their own side voted against the various bills, in which case - as here - there would be a vote of no confidence in the elected government and a general election would then take place. For the opposition to hold the government to ransome, for that is what it seems like to me, seems very weird to me. But maybe I've not fully understood the procedure.

Have a wonderful, safe trip Dani. I'm sure you'll find some wonderful alternatives. When you get to San Francisco - check with the folks at your hotel (or B&B), I'm sure they can provide some up-to-the-minute suggestions for alternatives. Talk soon,
Kim

Dani, I think the Cliff House is open, according to one of my friends who is in SF. Check out their website. Have a great trip.

I have yet to walk through the Sutro Baths--have only just seen it from up above. It was on my list of things to do, but you know how that goes sometimes. There just wasn't quite enough time! I would love to walk through that cave though--will try for it next time!

Danielle

Luckily the museums were open as they were not related to the federal government. And you know how it goes--just after we left to come home the parks opened again. So typical, but it worked out okay--there was still plenty to do!

Danielle

Unfortunately we didn't have a car--saw Sausalito last year, but that is a place I would love to revisit. I am sure my mom would have loved it, too! Maybe next time--it's only ferry ride away to get to Sausalito! :)

Danielle

We did a Bay cruise and it was a good choice--it was one of my mom's favorite things from the trip. Amazing how choppy the water is on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge!

Danielle

We were shaking our heads in disbelief, too! It's all game playing but thankfully it's over with for the moment!

Danielle

Hi Kim--we had a good time even though a few things we wanted to do we were unable to. I had gotten suggestions for some other place to eat from a friend and it turned out to be really nice--even had WPA murals in it. We did a Bay cruise, too, which went around Alcatraz--mom liked that a lot. Unfortunately we had just left when things were opening up again. So typical. Still, there was plenty of other stuff to do and we didn't even get in all that we would have liked!
