Hooray for Atwood:)We like to think Hans Keilson is a bit Dutch too, he was born in Germany but moved to The Netherlands in 1936 and lived there till his death. He was such an interesting gentleman, I've seen and read a few interviews with him.

Crumpets are quite common here in Australia, and can be bought from supermarkets. I like them with butter and honey.

How exciting that you'll get to see Margaret Atwood! I voted for the next Slaves selection. Such good choices it was hard. I've started my German book but it's not the easy read as I was expecting. Will have to write a bit about that one soon.

How cool to have seen him. I did pick up the book so have it in hand and see that he now lives in Amsterdam and was part of the Dutch Resistance. I'm looking forward to reading his book. It looks like it was translated from German but I wonder if now he writes in Dutch? And I am still excited (though it seems a long way off) about Margaret Atwood!

I have only seen them locally in one store, and I think they are quite yummy--sort of like an English muffin, but they are a bit more spongy. The kind I bought have cinnamon and butter and honey sounds like it would make a very tasty pairing! :) Now I have to ration my little package out.

Which book have you started with for the GLM? I am reading The Wall right now by Marlen Haushofer--it is really good, though on the disturbing side. I am also enjoying the Christa Wolf book, though I think I am missing a lot of the references to people and events since I am fairly unfamiliar with East Germany from that period--still I am enjoying it as well. I am really thrilled that Margaret Atwood is coming--I will have to buy my ticket soon so that I know I have it in hand! And I've voted for the Slaves book, too--there were lots of good choices--and I would be happy to read any of them. I only hope to do better next year with reading them than I did this year!

the crumpet looks like what I think of as an english muffin. In fact, I bet that's exactly what it is and someone looking for a familiar term for it called it by a muffin name when it isn't really a muffin...

I think they are very similar, but the crumpet is spongier--an English muffin sort of 'drier' and crisper--at least that is what is noticeably differene between the two to me. In any case-and whatever it really is--I love the cinnamon 'crumpets' that I linked to in my post--and look forward to my treat in the weekend! :)

He published a few works under nom de plume Benjamin Cooper as early as 1939. Hans Keilson was very well known as a psychoanlytic/psychiatrist. He passed away at the age of 101 on 31 May 2011.

Funnily enough I was eating a crumpet dripping with butter as I started reading your post (no time for breakfast today as I used the snooze button a few too many times!)
They are definitely NOT like muffins (English variety) although you do need to toast both. Muffins are very dense whereas crumpets have little holes in the top (to absorb the butter)and while I do like muffins with jam, crumpets should be eaten just with butter (according to my Yorkshire mum and granny anyway)
I'm not sure what I think about cinnamon flavoured ones - normally I would have cinnamon anything as I adore it, but crumpets...? Never seen them this side of the pond - the ones we have are just plain but utterly delicious (she says, trying to wipe butter off the keyboard!)

In a similar situation as you re library books waiting for collection - there are currently nine waiting for me and no room to collect them unless I either get a move on with reading what I have or make the decision as to what has to go back!
I haven't done as much reading at home as I have been both busy and trying to work through the backlog of TV shows I have been merrily recording but have failed to watch so that now the Sky Plus is close to full much to my other half's irritation - clearly I'm going to have to take a break from Game of Thrones to get some reading done!

Thanks for all the read-along info. I have always wanted to read Wilkie Collins, so perhaps this is the time (well almost time). I also voted to read with The Slaves. That's a new group to me. I voted for jamaica Inn, but would read any of them. They are all new to me except The Secret History, my favorite book and due for a reread soon.

As Liz F says, crumpets have little holes to help the butter drip through. I like them with butter and then a honey! Talk about piling on the calories! But they are such a treat and I love them in the afternoon with either tea or hot chocolate, a cosy rug and a good book (of course!)
As far as books go, do get your mitts on Catherine Law's latest, The Flower Book. And, says she, delightedly, the 5th and final Elizabeth Jane Howard Cazalet Chronicle has arrived this morning, All Change. What a treat in store!

It's very warm here all of a sudden but I suffer from the time change. I find it very hard to adjust. In theory we go to bed earlier in summer which is not logical. No use to maon though. They are not going to change it back, are they.
I've never had a crumpet but I'm sure it's nice. We had pumpkin pie the other day.
I have a feeling we will like the Keilson.
My 2014 list is still not finished.

Crumpets look suspiciously like English muffins. Very cool that Atwood will be there in April! I saw her talk way back when Alias Grace came out and it was a packed house. But it was so fantastic too.

Thanks Danielle, I actually found that out under my comments on The Slaves blog, so my vote is still on. I left the original comment and then misunderstood the info on the left sidebar, and thought that I needed to be a blogger.

When I was little we called those crumpets pikelets,which I suspect is a northern name for the same thing. The point is that if you want to be authentic, they should never be eaten with preserves. The only thing to do with a pikelet/crumpet is to cover it with lashings of butter so that all the holes are running with it and when you bite into it the melted butter runs down your chin. As you might imagine this can be ruinous to any book that happens to be around and I strongly recommend that you do not combine eating and reading in this case.

My mum who was Leeds born and bred used to call them pikelets too - which caused no end of confusion when she tried to buy some after we moved down to Bedfordshire!

I'll have to look up his other books--just out of curiosity. I will start reading the book this weekend--it should be interesting, especially considering his experiences and profession. Sounds like he lived a long (and hopefully very full) life.

I always hit the snooze button--I actually set the clock just a little earlier so I can do just that! I'm obviously missing out on the real thing when it comes to crumpets. I guess the packaging does say 'English style' . . . I love anything with cinnamon, so whatever these are I am still liking these even if they aren't quite the same as what you eat. I think we are missing out here not having these. Lots of varieties of muffins though. I don't have any TV programs that I am watching at the moment--usually I only will check out what is on PBS on the weekends, but it isn't as though I have loads of extra time--I tend to spend all that non-TV time on the computer....

I'm up for any excuse to add butter to my bread (or in this case--crumpet!). Honey sounds equally as good--and sometimes you just have to ignore the calories. I will look for the Law book! :) And I am trying to hold off on the new Elizabeth Jane Howard--until it comes out in paper since I am still only on the second book--am trying to reread them all before picking up the last one. Did I see somewhere where this is not the final, final book (or that not all the threads are tidied up at the end?).

Today was very mild weather but it won't last. Next week we have winter-like weather coming. The time change throws me off every time. I sort of wish they would just leave it alone--I'm not even sure why they bother with it all. Pumpkin pie is my favorite and I look forward to it every Thanksgiving! I hope the Keilson is good--I think I need to sit somewhere quiet with a nice hour or two of good reading time to start it properly--hopefully I can manage that this weekend. I am looking forward to seeing the new list! :)

My husband and son love crumpets! I like them too, but they have yeast in and that's one of my banned substances, alas. It's such a shame I have to give up so many nice things, but there it is. How exciting to have Margaret Atwood come to visit - she's such a superstar. And isn't it horrid and dark now! I'm telling myself it's more reading time inside with the curtains drawn and the fire on...

Scottish crumpets are really just big pancakes and are much tastier than English crumpets which I don't like much at all, even covered with melted butter or jam. I hope you do manage to get here to Scotland sometime to sample the real thing!

All sorts of treats! :) Those photos make me hungry--I will be having one of my 'crumpets' this weekend (even if they are not the real thing--they are still pretty yummy). The real thing looks quite delish by the way. Thanks for the BBC links as I am always on the look out for new things to load onto my MP3 player! I am never at a loss for something good to read or watch or listen to! I never mind good bookish suggestions like these however. I am especially interested in the Atwood now that I know she is coming to a local event next spring!
