Wow, has it really been so long since my last bullet-point post? It's been a long tiring week this week, too, so a little mindlessness to get the weekend started.
- I am still in a state of upheaval at home. My ceiling is partially finished. You know how you start one project thinking it will be simple and then turns out to be more work than anticipated? Now the room is also going to be painted.
- Dust is everywhere--including the little room off my living room where I keep most of my books. The door had been tightly closed but every surface has still been covered in a fine, grungy dust. I shall be cleaning this weekend.
- Sigh.
- I will get in some entertainment however. I have season tickets to the Broadway shows and this weekend I get to see Kinky Boots. I actually wasn't familiar with the story, but everything I have seen has been really good, so I am sure this will be as well. Some little treat to look forward to.
- I also have the next episode of The Great British Baking Show to look forward to, which I am thoroughly addicted to!
- In my last bullet point post I alluded to this, which I seem to have never followed up on. It's a great idea, and maybe I will give it a go in 2016. My, how short my attention span (or memory in this case) is.
- I am still reading my 1924 Club book, Edna Ferber's So Big, which is pretty good. I am not sure I will finish it by the end of October however. I knew it would be a stretch considering how slowly I read, but it has long been on my reading pile, so a good excuse to pick it up and finally get to it anyway.
- I will finish the Ferber, even if it spills over into November. Because it is on 'the list'. Why is it that every time I decide I am going to really make headway on a pile of books, all I can think about is gorging myself on other books (that are not on the list)?
- Part of my problem, which I wish was not a problem, is the (silly, I know) disappointment that I might read even fewer books than last year.
- So, I have a solution (which of course is going to interfere with the list). Remember a while ago I shared this link--those under two hour reads? Okay, so maybe those books might be under two hour reads for some readers, but I am slow so they would certainly take much longer than a couple of hours.
- Still shorter novels, or novellas might be a solution to my problem. Interspersed with my approved list reads, I can drop in a short book here and there.
- To that end I decided to pick up a graphic novel, which also go quicker for me than full length novels. And graphic novels are always a genre I want to read but never seem to get around to.
- So, I have been reading Israeli-author, Rutu Modan's Exit Wounds, which I bought from a recommendation when I was taking my Israeli Literature class. I am satisfying two desires at once. I get back to Israeli Lit, which I miss reading, and I will have a quick finish to help me feel a small sense of accomplishment. Finishes are always encouraging, aren't they?
- And I am quite enjoying the story, it is compelling reading!
- If you have a good graphic novel you can recommend, please do so. I can count on one hand how many graphic novels I own. And I can probably count on the other hand how many I have read! That is definitely a gaping hole in my reading.
- And I have even finished one book from the list already, Laura Ingalls Wilder's By the Shores of Silver Lake, which was sheer delight to read. I will write about it next week and have already pulled The Long Winter from my shelves in anticipation of starting next.
- I might even start it this weekend, though I won't have much free time to fill with reading (sadly). I hope to spend any reading time finishing the Modan and also a mystery that I have reached that moment of 'no turning back'.
- I hope you get to spend more time with your books than I will! Happy reading everyone.
